I view my creative process with corrugated cardboard in the same way that I approach painting a painting. Starting with a blank canvas, it is important to build layer upon layer to establish the illusion of space and distance. Due to the monochromatic nature of the medium, the challenge was creating the effect of depth and dimension within each individual object. This was accomplished in various ways. Multiple layering within each figure or object helped to create shadow and proportion. As my work progressed, I paid more attention to the quality, grade, and the subtle shades of brown in the cardboard. These nuances allowed me to manipulate the cardboard, generating a greater range to the look and feel within my subject matter. In my earlier works, I wanted to honor some well-known masterpieces by recreating them in cardboard. After producing multiple “corrugated masterpieces,” I moved on to creating original works of art. I will continue to explore and push the boundaries of cardboard as an art medium with the added value of minimizing my contribution to landfills. My goal for future art pieces will be to create cardboard paintings that are both visually compelling and grab the viewer’s attention.
